First Antenna of MeerKAT Radio Telescope Unveiled

South Africa’s Minister of Science and Technology, Derek Hanekom, revealed the first antenna of the MeerKAT radio telescope on Thursday, March 27th. The Karoo Array Processor Building was also introduced as the facility that will contain the data-processing equipment and electrical power equipment for the MeerKAT.

The entire project is scheduled to be completed in 2017 and will feature 64 dishes that will be incorporated into the first phase of building the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). The SKA is an international project to develop and build the world’s largest radio telescope. It will be more powerful and 10,000 times faster than current equipment.
