As part of its effort to stay ahead of new and emerging technologies, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will vote later this month on proposed rules to address the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in generating illegal robocalls.
According to a press release issued by the Commission in mid-July, the new rules have been proposed by FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel and would “require callers to disclose their use of AI-generated calls (while also) supporting technologies that alert and protect consumers from unwanted and illegal AI-generated calls, and protecting positive uses of AI to help people with disabilities utilize the telephone networks.”
In addition, the proposed rules would seek comment on “developing technologies that can alert consumers to AI-generated unwanted and illegal calls and texts.”
A vote on the proposed rules is expected at the FCC’s August Open meeting.
