FCC to Investigate the Use of Cellular Wireless Systems Above 24 GHz

The Federal Communications Commission has issued a Notice of Inquiry (NOI) to research the use of cellular wireless systems operating in frequencies above 24 GHz. The NOI focuses on using the possibility of licensing 24 GHz to 90 GHz. This band lies between the upper portion of the SHF (Super High Frequency) band and the lower portion of the EHF (Extremely High Frequency) band.

Currently, mobile network systems operate in the UHF (Ultra High Frequency) band, but the amount of available spectrum has shrunk. The use of the SHF and EHF bands would offer super-fast cellular networks that are comparable to standard wireline broadband.
