The federal government may still be in shut-down mode, but it’s (almost) business as usual over at the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
In a statement issued December 22nd (the Saturday before Christmas), Brian Hart, Director of the FCC’s Office of Media Relations, informed FCC employees and the public that the Commission “plans to remain open and pay staff at least through the close of business on Wednesday, January 2, 2019, despite the partial government shutdown.”
How is this possible? Well, as hinted in its “Plan for an Orderly Shutdown Due to a Lapse in Congressional Appropriations” issued in mid-December, the FCC would remain open if “prior year funds are available to continue agency operations during a lapse.” So, apparently, the FCC had sufficient funds on hand to continue operations (at least until yesterday!)
