The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is seeking comments on its plan to expand spectrum access for satellite services.
In a Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM), the Commission asks for comments and suggestions on how the 12.7 GHz and 42 GHz spectrum bands could be better used by satellite communications services, as either an alternative or complement to previous ideas for terrestrial wireless communications.
According to the Commission, current and next-generation satellite services offer an important option for expanding global access to high-speed connectivity, with faster and more reliable services with lower latency. The Commission says that its goal is to make over 20,000 megahertz of additional spectrum available for satellite use.
The FCC’s NPRM on expanding spectrum for high-speed internet services originating from satellites is available at https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/FCC-25-29A1.pdf. Comments on the proposed rulemaking can be filed through the end of June through the Commission’s electronic comment filing system at https://apps.fcc.gov/ecfs/ (see the NPRM for the reference docket information).
