FCC Seeks Assistance on Pirate Radio Enforcement

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is enlisting the support of government and public safety officials, real estate professionals and advertising executives as part of its effort to fight the spread of pirate radio stations.

The Commission accurately notes that a number of businesses and non-profit organizations may be unknowingly or unintentionally supporting pirate radio operations, for example, by providing physical space for broadcast equipment or buying advertising that supports pirate radio broadcasts. Accordingly, the Commission sent letters in early March 2016 to at least 12 separate entities seeking their assistance in identifying pirate radio operations.

Letters were sent to the following organizations:

  • Advertising Club of NY
  • Advertising Self-Regulatory Council
  • American Association of Advertising Agencies
  • Association of National Advertisers
  • National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts
  • National Association of Residential Property Managers
  • Rental Property Owners Association
  • International City/Council Management Association
  • National Association of Attorneys General
  • National Association of Chiefs of Police
  • National Public Safety Telecommunications Council
  • S. Conference of Mayors

The letters also included a copy of the Commission’s latest enforcement advisory regarding unauthorized radio broadcasting, which summarizes current regulations and provides information on how to notify the FCC of suspected illegal radio operations.
