The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has verified the “Conditional Approval” status of four drone systems previously included on the agency’s Covered List of systems and components, making them available for importation and/or sale in the U.S.
According to a press release, the Commission action was based on an assessment by the U.S. Department of War that the four uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS, generally referred to as drones) did not pose a threat to national security. The DoW’s assessment follows the Department’s January determination that certain types of UAS and UAS critical components were either on their “Blue UAS Cleared List” or quality as “domestic end products” under the Buy American Standard.
The use of UAS technology has been a critical element in recent combat operations, including those in Ukraine and Iran.
The FCC says that entities seeking to obtain Conditional Approval for their UAS technology should submit information to the agency at drones@fcc.gov. The information will then be forwarded for evaluation by the DoW and the Department of Homeland Security for a determination.
