The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has released its annual report to Congress, detailing consumer complaints and enforcement action in connection with illegal robocalls.
Released at the end of last year, the report offers insight into trends related to informal consumer complaints regarding robocalls that were received by the Commission over five full calendar years, from 2017-2021, as well as complaint data and information about enforcement actions through November 2022.
The FCC’s Enforcement Bureau has significantly stepped-up actions in recent years against robocalls, issuing several multi-million-dollar fines. This includes a record proposed fine of $45 million issued against a Florida-based company in February 2022.
As a result, informal consumer complaints have dropped dramatically over the past five years, from more than 330,000 in 2018, to just 230,000 in 2021. And, for the first 11 months of 2022, the number of robocall-related complaints filed with the FCC dropped to a 5-year low, with just over 161,000 complaints filed
