FCC Plans Auction of Prime Mid-Band Spectrum

On the heels of the conclusion of the agency’s successful AWS-3 wireless spectrum auction, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is getting ready to launch its next auction for mid-band wireless spectrum.

According to a press release issued by the FCC in late June, the Commission will vote at its July 22nd meeting on the proposed auction of 160 megahertz of spectrum in the upper C-band (3.98-4.14 GHz) in 2027. In addition, the Commission will also consider new rules intended to “harmonize terrestrial wireless operations across the entire C-band to create a single ‘super-band’ spanning 440 megahertz (3.7-4.14 GHz).”

The latest auction is part of a Congressional requirement that the FCC auction at least 100  megahertz of upper C-band spectrum by not later than July 2027. The FCC says that these auctions will help position America as the global leader in next-generation connectivity, while also raising billions of dollars for the U.S. federal government.
