FCC Further Delays U-NII Device Certification Requirements

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has further delayed its certification requirements for certain Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure (U-NII) devices.

The certification requirements, which were originally slated to take effect on June 2, 2015, apply to U-NII devices operating in the 5 GHz band. Such devices are used for short range, high speed wireless connections, such as Wi-Fi enabled local area networks used in public places to connect smart phones, tablets and laptop computers to the broadband network. In response to petitions from interested parties, the Commission issued an Order on June 1, 2015, extending the certification date to December 2, 2015.

The Commission has now further extended the certification date to March 2, 2016. According to an Order issued in early December 2015, this latest extension is in response to additional requests to extend the certification deadline as part of a larger review of the transition provisions and rules recently adopted by the FCC for the U-NII 3 band.
