FCC Extends Comment Period on Human Exposure to RF

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has granted a request to extend the deadline for public comment on its plans to formalize additional radiofrequency (RF) exposure limits for certain types of technologies.

In a public notice issued in mid-May, the FCC’s Office of Engineering and Technology (OET) extended until June 17 the comment date on a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking issued last December. Once adopted, the rulemaking would set new RF exposure limits for future uses of wireless technologies, including portable devices operating at high frequencies and wireless power transfer (WPT) equipment.

According to the public notice, the OET’s decision to extend the comment period was in response to a request from Momentum Dynamics Corporation for a 45-days extension. The request cited the need for the company to conduct additional testing to support its comments, which has been made difficult due to COVID-19 related workplace restrictions.

In its decision, the OET argued that a 14-day extension represented a balance between the need for accommodation in the present circumstances and avoiding further delays in the rulemaking proceeding.
