FCC Ends Successful Wireless Spectrum Auction

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has concluded its latest auction for wireless spectrum, deeming it “highly successful.”

The FCC’s AWS-3 auction (formally known as Auction 113) launched in early June and opened bidding for spectrum licenses in the 1695-1710, 1755-1780, and 2155-2180 MHz bands. According to the FCC, the auction made available mid-band wireless spectrum that had not been previously allocated.

According to a press release issued by the Commission in late June, seventeen qualified bidders participated in the auction over 72 rounds of bidding, with total winning bids reportedly more than $3.5 billion, exceeding the FCC’s expectations for this auction.

The FCC says that the results of this latest auction confirm the strength of the FCC’s auction program and help to position the Commission for a forthcoming auction for spectrum in the upper C-band, which must be completed by July 2027 under current congressional deadlines.
