FCC Begins 5G Spectrum Auction

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has initiated its latest effort to support the broad deployment of 5G communications technologies in the U.S. with the opening of a new 5G spectrum auction.

Launched on December 8, the auction will make available 280 megahertz of prime mid-band 5G spectrum in the 3.7-3.98 GHz band, the largest mid-band 5G spectrum auction to date, according to an FCC press release. The auction will award nearly 5700 flexible-use overlay licenses based on “Partial Economic Areas” to help ensure widespread geographic coverage and capacity.

The 5G spectrum auction is part of the FCC’s initiative to foster the deployment of next-generation connectivity across the country under its 5G FAST plan.
