EMC Consulting

Keith Armstrong graduated in 1972 from Imperial College, London, specializing in electronic design and field theory. After working in several countries, he joined the first pro-audio custom-mixing-desk manufacturer to use digital audio. Five years of intense work resulted in the ability to design the lowest-noise A-D convertors correct at the first iteration, with the most sensitive analog and digital circuits on the same ground plane. Later, Keith added switching power converters to his ‘right first time’ approach.

When manufacturers began testing to the EMC Directive, those using Keith’s approach found tests easy to pass. This became the basis of his independent company, started in 1990: Cherry Clough Consultants (after his house – a “Cherry Clough” being Norwegian Viking for a valley with cherry trees).

Enough of Cherry Clough’s 800+ satisfied customers worldwide have adopted Keith’s “Good EM Engineering” approach that it is well-proven to be cost-effective in all applications, with even the toughest EMC standards, up to 24GHz (so far!).

A Dash of Maxwell’s: A Maxwell’s Equations Primer – Part Two

Maxwell’s Equations are eloquently simple yet excruciatingly complex. Their first statement by James Clerk Maxwell in 1864 heralded the beginning of the age of radio and, one could argue, the age of modern electronics.

Since 1987 Keith’s Working Groups have created the brand-new discipline of managing the functional safety risks caused by EMI. This is hugely important for future safety, most especially for autonomous vehicles.

EMC Chambers

Bruce Alexander is the President of Raymond EMC. His start in the industry was back in ’92 as an installer with Rayproof Canada. When Raymond EMC was established in ’94, he started testing and a little later on he started an install company. In 2012 he purchased Raymond EMC.

Back then, the bulk of Raymond EMC’s work was in Tempest shielding, but over the last few years the company has become well known as an excellent supplier of EMC chambers. “It’s really been our approach to client care and customer service that had propelled our recent growth”, says Bruce. And the company has grown exponentially in the last few years!

PCB Design Consulting

Dr. Bruce Archambeault is an IBM Distinguished Engineer (Retired) at IBM in Research Triangle Park, NC. He received his B.S.E.E degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1977 and his M.S.E.E degree from Northeastern University in 1981. He received his Ph. D. from the University of New Hampshire in 1997. His doctoral research was in the area of computational electromagnetics applied to real-world EMC problems.

In 1981 he joined Digital Equipment Corporation and had assignments ranging from EMC/TEMPEST product design and testing to developing computational electromagnetic EMC-related software tools. In 1994 he joined SETH Corporation where he continued to develop computational electromagnetic EMC-related software tools. In 1997 he joined IBM in Raleigh, N.C. where he was the lead EMC engineer, responsible for EMC tool development and use on a variety of products. During his career in the U.S. Air Force he was responsible for in-house communications security and TEMPEST/EMC related research and development projects.

Dr. Archambeault has authored or co-authored over 100 papers in computational electromagnetics and EMC in general. He is the author of the book “PCB Design for Real-World EMI Control” and the lead author of the book titled “EMI/EMC
Computational Modeling Handbook”.

Medical Device Regulatory and Compliance Consulting

Leo Eisner is principal medical  device  compliance/regulatory  consultant at Eisner Safety Consultants. For the last 25 years Leo’s focus has been medical electrical equipment and he has been dubbed the “IEC 60601 guy.” He is a Safety Professional Engineer.

Leo is active in the standards development world primarily on the IEC 60601 series. He is a US TAG (AAMI) co-chair of IEC SC62D, member of TC62, SC62A & 62D (US & IEC). He is on AAMI Electrical Safety Committee which develops ANSI/AAMI ES60601-1 (US Version) and Hospital Bed Working Group. He is convener of SC62D/JWG9 (IEC/ISO 80601-2-58) and member of the CAG for IEC SC62D. Leo is a member of US TAG & IEC TC62/SC62A including WG 14 (Interpretations for IEC 60601-1), MT 28 (Electrical Hazards) and MT 30 (Overheating, fire protection & additional hazards) – all three groups involved in IEC 60601-1, draft edition 3.2.

He routinely speaks/writes as an international expert on IEC 60601 Series & medical device regulatory topics.

Leo is working with FDA CDRH standards and conformity assessment group, providing training on IEC 60601-1, to help FDA develop an Accreditation Scheme for Conformity Assessment for IEC 60601 Series from March 2018.

EMC Training

Daryl Gerke (PE) is the surviving partner of Kimmel Gerke Associates, an engineering consulting firm specializing in EMC. In full time EMC practice since 1987, Daryl and his late business partner Bill Kimmel (PE) solved or prevented hundreds of EMC problems in a wide range of industries – computers, medical, military, avionics, industrial controls, vehicular electronics and more.

Daryl got started in EMC creating interference as a teen age radio ham. His passion for radios led to a BSEE (University of Nebraska – 1968) and his first job with Collins Radio. Having radio on his resume twice led to EMC /TEMPEST/EMP in 1970 with Univac Defense Systems, and he has been involved with EMC ever since.

While at Univac, Daryl led a one year classified research project to EMP harden the UYK-20 Navy standard minicomputer, along with classified TEMPEST projects.

In 1978, he and colleague Bill Kimmel began moonlighting, which led to full time EMC consulting in 1987. Daryl also authored or co-authored three books, a 20 year newsletter, and over 200 technical articles on EMC. He and Bill trained 12,000+ students through their public and in-house courses. No longer consulting, Daryl remains active in EMC training.

George M. Kunkel, EMI shielding expert, inventor and author, has been an EMC design engineer for over 50 years of his life. George is the inventor of Spira’s unique, patented spiral EMI gasket. Don MacArthur has over 30 years experience in product development, EMC, testing and signal integrity. He has developed products for military, commercial and industrial applications. Don began his career working for the U.S. Navy on the AEGIS SPY-1 radar where he spent 10 years as a system test engineer.

After the Navy, Don developed a compliance engineering department for a leading manufacturer of high-reliable digital systems now used to protect power grids around the world. Don has led efforts to design products to pass a variety national/international EMC, safety, and environmental standards and has provided technical design guidance to product development teams concerning compliance issues. He has evaluated proposed product designs to ensure EMC compliance with applicable standards and setup several EMC test facilities.

Kenneth Ross is one of the world’s most experienced and well-known lawyers and consultants practicing in the areas of product safety, product liability prevention, risk management, and corporate and regulatory compliance. Werner Schaefer owns Schaefer Associates, a training and consulting firm providing services to electronic equipment manufacturers, testing and calibration laboratories, governmental and accreditation bodies.

Werner received his MSEE from Darmstadt University (1982) and MBA from Rendsburg University (1990). His began his career at Hewlett-Packard Co. in 1983 holding positions in RF/uwave and EMI test equipment applications, marketing and R&D. In 1998 he began performing assessments of RF/uwave, EMC, Radio and Telecom testing laboratories and calibration laboratories in RF/uwave. In 2000, Werner joined Cisco Systems as Corporate Compliance Quality Manager responsible for all accredited laboratories in the US and parts of Europe. In 2006 he began assessment activities for NVLAP in the same technical areas and lighting testing.

In 2011, Werner devoted full-time effort to Schaefer Associates developing user-specific training on uncertainty calculations for EMC laboratories, EMC measurement techniques and implementation in laboratories, implementation of quality systems for testing and calibration, supporting services for internal audits and technical evaluations, preparatory services for accreditation applications and support during the accreditation process.

Werner has authored numerous papers on RF/uwave and EMI measurement in the US and Europe and co-authored a book on RF measurement techniques in Germany.

Electronic System Design

Christopher Semanson is a Functional Safety manager working at Renesas Electronics in Research Triangle Park, NC.  He received his B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering as well as his M.S in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan at Dearborn.  His experience is rooted in the heart of Detroit where he first started work at Ford Motor Company as a controls engineer while teaching at the University of Michigan.  As a result of his passion for understanding EMI in electronic systems, he has a published thesis on how to introduce those concepts at an undergraduate level, as well as several papers focused on design.

In 2016 he joined Renesas Electronics as an engineer with a focus on analog support, where projects ranged from bootloader trouble shooting, to electronics interfacing.  In 2018, he moved into functional safety where he manages the development of PMIC semiconductors against ISO26262, while still consulting on EMI reduction.
