FAA Advisory Panel Meeting to Discuss Relaxing Portable Electronic Device Restrictions

The FAA Portable Electronic Devices (PED) Advisory and Rulemaking Committee (ARC), a committee comprised of members of the aviation community and the FAA, began meeting in January 2013 to make recommendations for clarification and guidance on allowing the use of additional PEDs in flight without compromising the continued safe operation of aircraft.

The Committee will meet this week to finalize its recommendations and present them to the FAA at the end of the month.

The Committee was scheduled to report back in July but requested an extension until the end of September. According to several anonymous committee members, guidelines could be modified to allow reading of e-books or other publications, listening to podcasts and watching videos. The ban on calls, sending and receiving e-mails and text messages and using Wi-Fi during takeoff and landing is expected to remain in effect.
