EU Commission approves sound safety standards for music players

The Commission of the European Union (EU) has taken steps to regulate sound pressure from personal music players and mobile phones with a music playing function.

In 2009, the Commission expressed concerns about the risk of sound pressure from personal music players, and issued Mandate M/452, requesting European standardization bodies to draft requirements addressing sound pressure. In response to the Commission’s mandate, the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (Cenelec) adopted in January 2011 EN 60065:2002/A12: 2011 “Audio, video and similar electronic apparatus—Safety requirements,” and EN 60950-1: 2006/A12:2011 “Information technology equipment—Safety—Part 1: General requirements.”

With these standards finally in place, the Commission has now issued an Implementing Decision, published in January 2012 in the Official Journal of the European Union.  As a result, the Cenelec standards will be published in the Official Journal as standards that can be used to demonstrate conformity with the essential requirements of the EU’s Directive on General Product Safety (2001/95/EC).
