ETSI Releases Reports on THz Communications Systems

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has recently announced the publication of two reports setting out a framework for future standardization efforts applicable to terahertz (THz) communications systems and devices.

The first of the two reports, ETSI GR THz 001, “TeraHertz modeling (THz): Identification of use cases for THz communications systems,” presents a variety of “use cases” that would potentially benefit from the application of THz communications technologies. The report also lays out potential scenarios for the deployment of THz technologies, including industrial control and management systems, robotics, and ultra-high data rate transmission, as well as specific requirements that may be applicable.

The second report, ETSI GR THz 002, “Terahertz technology (THz): Identification of frequency bands of interest for THz communication systems,” describes the current regulatory map for the sub-THz and THz frequency bands of interest and identifies existing services that operate in these bands that should be considered for co-existence evaluation and study.

ETSI says that its preliminary efforts regarding THz are intended to pave the way for future standardization efforts for THz-based technologies.
