EPA Expands ENERGY STAR® Scope of MET Laboratories to Include Lighting Categories

Testing and certification organization MET Laboratories has received recognition from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a Certification Body (CB) for Luminaires (including sub-components), Integral LED Lamps, & Set-Top and Cable Boxes under the ENERGY STAR® program.

The EPA recognition establishes MET as an independent third-party eligible to certify products to ENERGY STAR energy efficiency requirements for these categories, in addition to already recognized categories.  Since 2010, MET has been EPA-recognized to test and certify a broad range of products, including: Televisions, Displays, Computers (notebooks, thin clients, desktops, workstations, small-scale servers), Computer Servers, Telephony, Imaging Equipment, Battery Charging Systems & new and rebuilt Refrigerated Beverage Vending Machines.

Effective January 1, 2011, third party certification from an EPA-recognized CB has been required for manufacturers that want their products to be labeled with the ENERGY STAR mark.  As part of this program, manufacturers must also comply with post-market verification testing to validate continuing energy performance.

VSWR and its Effects on Power Amplifiers

Voltage Standing Wave Ratio results from an impedance mismatch between a source (an amplifier) and a load (test application). This mismatch can influence the performance of the source.

MET Labs qualifies and verifies that products meet ENERGY STAR requirements by testing them in its EPA-recognized laboratories, by witness or supervised testing at manufacturers’ labs, or by verifying testing data from other EPA-recognized third-party labs.

MET can also perform the ENERGY STAR In Situ Temperature Measurement Test (ISTMT) for lighting products: ANSI/UL 1598 or ANSI/UL 153-05.

“We are pleased the EPA has expanded our recognition to include these important product categories,” says Troy Franklin, Director of MET’s Environmental and Energy Laboratory.  “MET is uniquely positioned to work with partner labs and manufacturers to help get their energy efficient products ENERGY STAR labeled and on the market as expeditiously as possible.”

MET plans to broaden the scope of its recognition over the coming months to also include compact fluorescent lights (CFLs).
