Engineers Awarded $1.7 Million Grant to Study New Class of Ultra-Thin Film Materials

Three engineers from the University of California Riverside have been awarded a 1.7 million grant by the National Science Foundation to study a new class of ultra-thin film materials, named van der Waals materials.

The grant will allow the team of engineers to characterize, analyze, and synthesize van der Waals materials and heterostructures associated with these materials. The team will be working to develop production methods and explore the electrical, optical, and thermal trends of the material and heterostructures. The use of the ultra-films of van der Waals materials could lead to increased speed and low energy dissipation in personal electronics, optoelectronic devices, and energy conversion systems.
