University of North Texas (UNT) researchers developed a directional antenna that when attached to a drone is capable of providing Wi-Fi to areas struck with disaster.
This new directional antenna has been able to provide Wi-Fi access to a range up to 5 kilometers while typical Wi-Fi antennas have a range of 100 meters. The directional antenna rotates to automatically align with an object to provide a stronger communications link, and eliminate signal interruptions. The researchers see this solution as a possible new form of wireless communication. Drone-to-drone communications would allow a communications infrastructure to be used when ground or satellite communications are down.
