Dissolvable Transient Electronics Being Developed at Iowa State University

A team of researchers have developed a material that is designed to dissolve when a trigger is stimulated.  The material was created with unique polymer composites and has been tested on transient LED and transistor technology.

The technology was demonstrated using a blue light-emitting diode that was mounted to a clear polymer composite base and the diode’s electrical wires were surrounded by the polymer. To start the degradation process, a drop of water was placed on the polymer and the wires. After a short time, the blue light stopped shining and a second drop of water dissolved the remaining base and wires.
