Far too many recalled products are still in the marketplace, according to Chairman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Elliot Kaye. Although Amazon and eBay block postings of recalled products, such as electronics with burn hazards, Craigslist takes a more passive approach.
Officially, sellers are prohibited from positing recalled items on Craigslist. However, in an ABC News interview Kaye said he does not believe that Craigslist is doing enough to prevent sales of dangerous items “as evidenced by the fact that there are still products every day.” He says that some recalls only result in 5% of items being returned or repaired. In mid-2014, Kaye started a seven year term as Chairman of the CPSC. He is eager to improve compliance, urging online retailers such as Craigslist to actively prevent sales of recalled goods.
