CPSC to allow consumers to post reports of unsafe products

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is set to launch a new website that will allow consumers to post reports of unsafe products, and manufacturers to report product safety problems.

The new website, which is accessible at www.SaferProducts.gov, is scheduled to officially launch on March 11, 2011, but is currently available through what the Commission calls a “soft-launch” phase.

As currently envisioned, SaferProducts.gov will allow consumers to file a report with the CPSC about an incident with an unsafe product or potentially hazardous consumer product.  Manufacturers and distributors will then be able to respond to reports of unsafe products, and may request that their response be posted along with the consumer’s original report.

Prior to the official launch of SaferProducts.com, the Commission is encouraging manufacturers to register with the CPSC so that they can receive timely, on-line access to reports submitted by consumers about their products.
