Tesla executives announced they are just a few months away from unveiling a stationary battery that could be used to power homes and businesses. The technology would likely derive from Tesla’s Model S, which uses rows of small cylindrical lithium-ion cells in a compact, flat battery pack.
Stationary batteries could be used by commercial clients, utility clients, and home owners who seek alternative or back up energy sources. The emerging home battery market could allow homeowners to go “off the grid” by combining energy collection via solar panels with storage in home batteries. Design is already complete and Tesla expects to start production of the home batteries in the next six months.
