Chrysler is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Ram 1500 trucks because contamination on the Electric Power Steering (EPS) control circuit board can cause a short. If this occurs, the power steering assist could stop working, and therefore extra steering effort will be required, especially at lower speeds.
A NHTSA report explains what went wrong:
Root cause was determined to be poorly passivated flux volatiles on the terminal surface due to low top side reaction oven temperature/nitrogen content which reacted, over time, to circuit board potting material through thin conformal coating application.
Chrysler will notify owners of the 442 trucks that are included in the recall, and dealers will replace the EPS unit, free of charge.
