Broadcaster Fined by the FCC for Transmitting From the Top of a Silo (from our “You Can’t Make This Stuff Up” file)

An Indiana broadcaster was fined $8,000 by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for transmitting from atop of a Hancock County farm silo. The FCC signed a forfeiture order against Martin Hensley’s Hoosier Public Radio Corp. for operating WRFM-FM 89.1 from an unauthorized location without special temporary authorization.

The case had begun after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) complained to the FCC that there was interference on an aeronautical radio frequency. The silo is three miles from WRFM’s authorized transmitter site and broadcasts occurred on September 28, 2010 and on February 10 and 14, 2011.
