Breakthrough in Charging Batteries Through Movements

A team of researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology has developed a new technology that generates power every time an electronic device is touched or rubbed. The team created a new material called triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) that harnesses static electricity.

TENG contains two sheets of material and when they touch, one donates electrons and the other receives them. When they’re separated, a voltage is generated. Through testing, the team has been able to generate 300 watts per square meter. They have incorporated TENGs into shoe insoles, floor mats and jackets to capture energy from walking or running.

Read more how TENGs could be used on a large scale to capture and harness wave or wind power.
