Automotive Crash Test Standards Being Developed in India

The Indian Road Transport Ministry has begun the process of creating standards for automobile safety, called the New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP). Test facilities are also being built to perform these tests throughout the country.

When the NCAP has been established, all new car models will undergo tests to ensure safety margins and will receive certification for structural strength. Currently, cars sold in India are only tested for front and rear crash tests. The National Automotive Testing and R+D Infrastructure Project (NATRiP) have begun developing state-of-the-art test facilities to perform the new safety tests.
