AT&T Fined $52 Million for Mishandling Electronic Waste

AT&T Fined $52 Million for Mishandling Electronic Waste | In Compliance Magazine

AT&T has settled with the state of California as part of a settlement that the company was illegally dumping hazardous waste and agreed to pay $52 million in civil penalties and environmental compliance. Investigations found that at more than 235 AT&T warehouses and dispatch centers throughout California, hazardous waste and other materials were illegally disposed of for over nine years.

The hazardous waste included electronic equipment, batteries, and aerosol cans, and was being sent to landfills that are not equipped to handle that type of waste. AT&T agreed to pay $23.8 million in civil penalties and will spend $28 million over the next five years to implement enhanced environmental compliance measures.
