Toy manufacturers should take note of the upcoming deadline for mandatory compliance with the provisions of the latest standard for toy safety.
As of April 30th, the provisions of ASTM F963-16, Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Toy Safety, are applicable to any toy subject to approval by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) under its rules. ASTM F963-16 was adopted by the CPSC under a Final Rule issued in January.
The latest version of ASTM F963 incorporates a number of changes from prior versions of the standard, including new testing requirements for batteries used in toys, updated labeling requirements for battery-operated devices and requirements for instructional literature. Also included in the latest version of the standard are additional requirements applicable to projectile toys and ride-on toys.
