Art Imitates Life – Or Signal Jamming!

Photo: The New York Times

The sounds of signal jamming and radio interference served as recent inspiration for composer Annie Gosfield and the JACK Quartet. This past weekend, in Brooklyn, NY, Gosfield and the string quartet debuted at the Roulette with their performance of “Signal Jamming and Random Interference“.

The performance involved the replication of the sounds of signal jamming and other random interference, similar to those heard in recordings of World War II and the Cold War. These sounds are described as abrasive, other-wordly, chaotic, unexpected, and at times, eerily beautiful. The group used extended techniques to produce the timbres and other effects needed to replicate these unique sounds.
