Apple Recalls Wireless Beats Speakers due to Fire Hazard

Apple is recalling 233,000 wireless speakers because the batteries can overheat, posing a fire hazard. Apple has received eight reports of incidents of the Beats Pill XL speakers overheating, including one with a burn to a consumer’s finger and one with damage to a consumer’s desk. The recalled Beats speakers were made in China and sold at Apple stores, online at Apple.com and Beatsbydre.com, and in major retail stores nationwide from January 2014 through June 2015 for about $300.

This recall involves all Beats Pill XL portable, wireless speakers. They are plastic and come in black, white, pink, metallic sky and titanium colors. The speakers are about 4 inches tall by 13 inches wide with a plastic mesh grille on the front and a built-in carrying handle to the rear. The small “b” Beats logo is on the grille and “beatspillXL” is on the handle. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled speakers and contact Apple for a $325 Apple Store credit or electronic payment. Apple will also provide a postage paid box for consumers to return their Pill XL speaker.
