AMETEK Introduces Indentron Series of Rockwell Hardness Testers

The Indentron Series of Rockwell hardness testing systems from AMETEK Test & Calibration Instruments features a unique cantilevered load arm configuration that provides an exceptional view of the indenter and test location. The cantilevered design allows the use of only one bearing, ensuring virtually friction-free and maintenance-free operation. This innovative design makes the Indentron ideal for testing inside diameters and recesses that are often impossible to test using standard indenters. It eliminates frictional inconsistencies that are typical of competitive testing systems. It also ensures accurate test positioning, which prolongs diamond life and enables international diameter testing as well as other tough to measure locations such as shoulders, recesses and grooves.

The Indentron is able to test inside diameters as small as 1 ½ inches with a standard indenter and as small as ½ inch with optional indenters. The tester also is able to test close to vertical surfaces, to within ¼ inch with the standard indenter and 3/32 inch with optional indenters. The tester’s use of precision dead weights for both major load and preload ensures accurate and repeatable measurements by reducing errors that may occur due to worn or improperly adjusted springs or load cells.

A Dash of Maxwell’s: A Maxwell’s Equations Primer – Part Two

Maxwell’s Equations are eloquently simple yet excruciatingly complex. Their first statement by James Clerk Maxwell in 1864 heralded the beginning of the age of radio and, one could argue, the age of modern electronics.

The Indentron is designed to reduce errors. Full load is automatically applied at the correct preload to offer better repeatability and reduce operator influence. Preload error monitoring prevents application of the full load if the preload is under or over applied.

The Indentron is available in two models. The basic 500 Series is offered for regular and superficial testing, and the advanced 600 Series is supplied for regular, superficial or a combination of test methods. Both models offer a large measurement envelope. The vertical capacity is a full 10 inches, and extended versions are available with a capacity of 15 inches. Both versions conform to ASTM E-18.

The Indentron 600 Series features advanced digital electronics and a display panel with membrane key pad for simple operation and fast scale conversions. Among the advance features of the Indentron 600 is an ability to average between 2 and 99 test results and to perform hardness scale conversions, round correction, minimum thickness and time at load.

The Indentron tester is quick and easy to calibrate. Its advanced electronics allow all scales to be calibrated independently thus ensuring high accuracy and low cost of ownership.

Indentron testers have RS-232 output for data transfer and are available with DataView software that was developed specifically for hardness test data collection. The Indentron is compatible as well with other data collection software and devices.
