Researchers at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute developed a new rechargeable lithium battery that is completely made of carbon components. Unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries, this new battery is made without toxic metal cobalt.
The team of researchers created this new battery by combining anode and cathode made with nanomaterial graphene and metallic lithium. This new design provides a higher charge capacity and up to three times higher energy density compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries. The team has performed over 1,000 charge-discharge cycles on the new battery and the battery has been highly stable.
