As an alternative to Wi-Fi or traditional DSL cables, some homeowners use power line networking, plugging adapters into electrical outlets so they can use existing electrical wiring to provide an Internet signal. Ofcom, the communications regulator in the UK, is cracking down on personal power line broadband service, although the practice itself is still legal.
OfCom is concerned that power line networking can cause security issues and interfere with important infrastructure such as police, ambulance, and military communications. OfCom has proposed that they should have the authority to shut down power line networks if the electromagnetic radiation from power line networks interferes with radio signals. In the proposal, failure to comply with the new guidelines would be punishable by fines of up to £5,000 or even three months of jail time.
