Sony Recalls VAIO-Brand Laptops

Sony Electronics, Inc. of San Diego, CA has announced the recall of about 680 of the company’s VAIO-brand flip laptop computers manufactured in China.

According to a recall notice issued by Sony and posted on the website of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the computers’ lithium-ion batteries can overheat, posing a fire and burn hazards to consumers. The company says that it is aware of four separate incidents that occurred in Asia in which the recalled computers overheated, resulting in the melting of the units along with smoke and fire. However, Sony has not received any reports of injuries.

The laptop computers were sold through Sony retail stores nationwide, and online at www.sony.store.com, from February through April 2014 for about $800.
