Cutting-Edge Terahertz Modulator Developed

A team of researchers from UCLA has developed a new broadband modulator that works across a wide range of the terahertz band and features very high efficiency and signal clarity.  This unique modulator can operate at room temperature, does not require an external light source, and can be incorporated into existing circuit manufacturing processes.

The researchers used an artificial metasurface made up of an array of micro-electromechanical units. The micro-electromechanical units can be opened and closed using an electrical voltage, and then encode incoming terahertz waves to match with a series of zeroes and ones to create an image. The terahertz modulator has the potential to develop more advanced medical and security imaging technology.

Read more about how this terahertz modulator has the ability to operate in a broadband manner unlike other metamaterials.
