Researchers from George Washington University, with the support of the National Science Foundation, have developed a new type of high-energy rechargeable batteries that use molten electrolytes, oxygen, and special “multiple electron” storage electrodes. The batteries, called molten air batteries, have the potential to replace conventional electric car batteries.
These batteries have the highest inherent electrical energy storage capacities than any other batteries developed to date, and have 20 to 50 times more storage capacity than lithium-ion batteries. They are able to recharge by electrochemically reinserting a significant amount of electrons, due to the use of activity of molten electrolytes.
