The Department of Transportation fined General Motors $35 million for how the recall of 2 million vehicles from ignition switch problems was handled. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, this fine is “the single highest civil penalty amount ever paid as a result of a NHTSA investigation of violations stemming from a recall.”
Through the investigation, the company was found to have violated federal safety laws. The recall was issued due to a flaw that allows an ignition switch to move out of the run position and fail to deploy airbags in a crash. In addition to the fine, GM will also need to change how they handle future reviews of safety issues.
