A new method of 3D printing was developed at Drexel University that has the capability of printing a live tumor and could change the future of cancer research. This living model gives a better understanding of how tumors behave and a more accurate evaluation of how they response to treatment.
The researchers combined a mixture of cervical cancer cells and a hydrogel substance to produce the tumor model. The 3D model was tested against a 2D culture sample using a common anti-cancer drug and the model shows more resistance to the drug than the cells in a petri dish. The research team is continuing their research to create tumors that are more comparable to ones that grow in the body and to print tumors comprised of multiple different cells.
