University of Detroit Mercy’s College of Engineering and Science recently celebrated its 91st annual Slide Rule event. A dinner, dance, and award ceremony designed to honor the year’s achievements within the college. The Slide Rule tradition, deeply rooted in Detroit Mercy’s history, serves as a platform to recognize both student and faculty excellence.
Each year, the Slide Rule includes an award where students vote and nominate individuals for the coveted Faculty of the Year award. This year, Mark Steffka was honored with the prestigious Faculty of the Year award for the Engineering department, a recognition of his outstanding teaching and commitment to student success.
Steffka started as an Adjunct professor in January of 2006, while working at General Motors. In 2018 he retired from GM and began teaching full-time at Detroit Mercy in 2019. This award comes at the culmination of Steffka’s time at Detroit Mercy, as he will be retiring at the end of the 2024 school year.
Steffka’s award underscores his dedication to fostering a supportive and challenging learning environment for engineering students. His innovative teaching methods and approachability have made him a favorite among students.
