University of Buffalo Researchers Develop Groundbreaking Way to Collect Underwater Data

Researchers in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences have developed an underwater Internet network using a 40 pound acoustic sensor. The project was funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation and testing was done in the Lake Erie, Lake LaSalle and the University’s Alumni Arena’s swimming pool.

The new underwater Internet system uses sound waves to overcome the obstacle of being underwater rather than using radio waves to connect to the Internet. The system allows for tsunami detection, oceanographic data collection, underwater oil reservoirs discovery, pollution monitoring and detection of drug smuggler vessels and much more. It also has the ability to communicate with any device that has an Internet connection, like a smartphone or computer.
