UL acquires Luminaire Testing Laboratory

Underwriters Laboratory today acquired Luminaire Testing Laboratory (LTL), a move that UL said will bolster its presence in the lighting industry.

LTL, of Allentown, Pa., is one of five testing laboratories approved by the U.S. Department of Energy for Energy Star qualification testing for light-emitting diode (LED) lighting products. LTL is instrumental in the development of photometric testing standards including IES-LM79, UL, of Northbrook, Ill., said in a news release.

The acquisition, financial terms of which were not disclosed, gives UL the ability to offer bundled safety and performance testing capabilities to the lighting industry. LTL will become part of UL’s Verification Services business.

A Dash of Maxwell’s: A Maxwell’s Equations Primer – Part One

Solving Maxwell’s Equations for real-life situations, like predicting the RF emissions from a cell tower, requires more mathematical horsepower than any individual mind can muster. These equations don’t give the scientist or engineer just insight, they are literally the answer to everything RF.

“With the acquisition of LTL we … are well positioned to meet the growing market demands for third party testing for performance and energy efficiency of LED products,” said Keith Williams, UL’s president and CEO.

Luminaires are two or more lamps wired together into one lighting fixture.
