Engineers from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science of Technology (KAIST) have devised a way to wirelessly charge electric buses while they’re moving. The On-Line Electric Vehicle (OLEV) buses are recharged by a power supply below the pavement as they move on the 15 mile course in Gumi, Korea.
The power transfer system called “dynamic charging” shapes electromagnetic fields to a specific direction minimizing losses while the buses are in motion. A receiver harvests up 100KW of electricity at 20 kHz with up to 85% efficiency leading to increased fuel efficiency and a size reduction in the buses’ battery.
