In an effort to support the government of Ukraine in its now year-long war with Russia, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has recently signed a mutual cooperation agreement with that country’s communications regulatory body.
According to a press release, FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel has signed an agreement with Liliia Malon, Ukraine’s Commissioner of its National Commission for the State Regulation of Electronic Communications, Radio Frequency Spectrum and the provision of Postal Services of Ukraine (the NCEC, for short). The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by Rosenworcel and Malon at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, calls for the agencies to cooperate on a wide range of vital communications issues, including the resilience of the telecommunications infrastructure, quality of service and coverage, 5G and other new technologies, and related security issues.
The MoU establishes a non-binding mechanism between the two regulatory authorities to exchange information and ideas to help develop and deploy advanced communications technologies in both countries. The MOU is also expected to provide opportunities for the U.S. to support Ukraine’s efforts to rebuild that country’s telecommunications infrastructure in the wake of the war’s aftermath.
