Mexico Lithium-Ion Battery Standard Takes Effect

A new standard applicable to the testing and labeling of all lithium-ion batteries imported into or sold in Mexico is now in effect.

The new standard, NOM-212-SCFI-2017, sets maximum allowable quantities of mercury and cadmium by weight in the composition of lithium-ion batteries. The standard also details testing methods and sampling requirements to ensure compliance as well as the procedure for obtaining certification with the standard’s requirements. Finally, the standard sets forth requirements for the labeling of batteries and/or on their packaging.

The standard, which took effect at the end of September 2019, exempts lithium-ion batteries that are integrated into electrical or electronic equipment and that cannot be sold separately.
