EU Commission Updates Caller Location Requirements for Advanced Mobile Devices

The Commission of the European Union (EU) has taken steps to update its regulations for caller location technologies used in advanced mobile devices.

Published in late February in the Official Journal of the European Union, Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/320 supplements the Commission’s earlier Directive regarding caller location technologies in emergency communications from mobile devices to include positioning technologies based on a global navigation satellite system (GNSS). Caller location solutions based on GNSS positioning technologies can be significantly more accurate than those that rely on cellular towers, especially in dense urban areas as well as in mountain and other remote areas, and have already been deployed in a number of EU Member States as well as several countries outside of the EU.

Under the terms of the Delegated Regulation, mobile device manufacturers will have until March 2022 to ensure that new mobile devices are capable of providing access to both Wi-Fi and GNSS location information in emergency communications.
