The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has taken steps to increase access to wireless signal boosters, thereby improving consumer access to wireless services.
Under the terms of a Second Report and Order issued in late March, the Commission has adopted rules that eliminate the current personal use restrictions on “provider-specific” wireless signal boosters. As a result, business operations and other enterprises can now use these provider-specific boosters to increase access and improve the quality of wireless services for their employees and for the general public.
As part of its action, the Commission has also proposed further rule changes that would extend the signal booster program to additional spectrum bands, permit the use of signal boosters embedded in vehicles, and lift personal use restrictions on wideband consumer signal boosters. Comments on these proposed rule changes can be filed through the FCC’s Electronic Comment Filing System, and referencing WT Docket No. 10-4. Comments are due by April 22nd.
