As part of its effort to keep pace with rapid changes in the technology and use of short-range communications, the Commission of the European Union (EU) has issued an update of its harmonized technical conditions for radio spectrum use.
Published in the Official Journal of the European Union in early August, Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2017/1483 is based on a 2016 report prepared by the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT) on technological and market developments in the area of short-range devices, and the need to amend certain aspects of the EU’s current requirements. The new Implementing Decision supersedes a number of earlier Commission decisions regarding the use of radio spectrum in EU member states.
According to the Commission, the changes “should give users predictability as regards other short-range devices that are allowed to use the same frequency band on a non-exclusive and shared basis.”
