Volkswagen is recalling the 2009 Routan because the air bag control units can fail. This defect can increase the risk of crash and injury to people sitting in the front seats of the minivan. The faulty control units could either prevent the air bags from deploying during a crash or make the air bags deploy inadvertently, without warning.
Specifically, NHTSA says the vehicles “may experience an Occupant Restraint Control module malfunction due to corrosion of the power supply integrated circuit.” Dealers will replace the air bag control unit, free of charge. Volkswagen reports that 1,037 cars are included in the recall.
